Federal Member State Leaders Call for Clear Electoral Timelines

Leaders from several Federal Member States have called on the Federal Government to provide greater clarity on electoral timelines, amid continued consultations on Somalia’s electoral framework.

In separate statements issued this week, regional officials emphasised the importance of predictable and agreed timelines to ensure political stability and institutional continuity. They noted that uncertainty surrounding election schedules has contributed to tensions between federal and state authorities.

Federal Member State leaders reiterated their position that any electoral process must be based on consensus and anchored in constitutional principles. They stressed that early agreement on timelines would enable regional administrations to prepare adequately and engage constructively in the process.

The Federal Government has maintained that consultations are ongoing and that no final decisions will be taken without broad stakeholder engagement. Officials have previously stated that electoral timelines will be determined through dialogue and in line with legal frameworks.

Political analysts observe that disagreements over timelines often reflect deeper concerns about power sharing and institutional roles within Somalia’s federal system. They caution that prolonged uncertainty could affect governance priorities and service delivery at both federal and state levels.

Civil society organisations have urged political leaders to avoid confrontational rhetoric and focus on compromise. They have also called for transparent communication to keep the public informed on progress made during consultations.

Talks between federal and state leaders are expected to continue as stakeholders work toward a mutually acceptable electoral roadmap.
